Una Noche
al Lunar
Ladino Life Songs
Arranged for soprano and strings by Arie Bar Droma
With the Israel Soloists Ensemble
(released 2005)
|
|
Tamar
Kleinberger's debut CD is a
unique project which brings Ladino
songs, originating in the culture of
the Jews of Spain, together with the
culture of Western classical music.
The album includes a varied collection
of traditional Ladino songs, arranged
for soprano and string orchestra. The arrangements were written by Arie
Bar
Droma - violinist, violist, composer and arranger, member of The Israel
Chamber Orchestra and founder of the Israel
Soloists Ensemble, which accompanies
Tamar in this recording.

Throughout the years, the Sephardic Jews'
culture absorbed many outside influences from different sources: from
the Arabic world of medieval Spain to movies, radio, and Western
musical fashions of the 20th century. It is due to precisely this
jumble of materials and influences that these songs possess a special
charm, beauty and depth.
In this performance there was no intention and no attempt to recreate
the past. On the contrary, the process of enrichment and inspiration
resulting from the meeting between different cultures led to the
creation of something new and original. This recording is in
fact an additional, unusual and exciting link in the developmental
chain of Ladino songs.

"...In her album 'Una
Noche al Lunar', Tamar Kleinberger performs songs for soprano and
string orchestra, based on traditional Ladino melodies. The composer
and arranger Arie Bar Droma took the Ladino, which flourished in the
crowded alleys of Jerusalem, and put it into into the stocks of western
classical music's orchestrated and precise discipline in a graceful and
innocent manner. When one reaches the familiar and wonderful track
'Adio Querida', even the Ashkenazi among us will be assailed by shivers
of yearning for the once young and innocent Israel, moved deeply by the
sweeter than honey voice of a soprano of international calibre, and
most of all understand that truly great music does not get lost in
adventurous fusions such as this..."
